Welcome to the official homepage for the Swedish Society for Maxillofacial Surgery
Maxillofacial surgery is the medical specialty responsible for diagnose, investigation and treatment of diseases and injuries of the oral cavity, jaws, facial skeleton and facial soft tissues. The specialty is recognized in most EU countries (Sweden and Denmark have so far not recognized it). In Sweden, there is instead the dental specialty “Käkkirurgi” (oral and maxillofacial surgery), which has more or less the same scope but without the requirement of a medical degree. According to Socialstyrelsen, SoS (The National Board of Health and Welfare), there were in June 2016 in total 171 persons who have both a dental and a medical degree in Sweden.
Within the dental speciality oral and maxillofacial surgery, 15 medically qualified surgeons have consultant positions and 4 more are in different level of training to become dually qualified surgeons.
The Swedish Society for Maxillofacial Surgery is a part of the Swedish Society of Medicine, therefore our main target group are dually qualified colleagues. However, we welcome all colleagues within our field with an interest in medicine and hospital care.
Maxillofacial surgery currently undergoes a very strong development internationally and in Sweden because of the unique double competence that in turn improves patient care and safety.
We hope this forum will attract an increasing number of members for continuous development and sharing of knowledge within all fields of this exciting and important specialty.
Welcome!
